    Beginner Questions

    998728
      Hello Oracle Professionals,

I am new to Oracle and a beginner in Data Guard.

      1) How to find archive log gap from Primary Database site?

      2) Do I need the DB_UNIQUE_NAME when setting the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 ? What is the purpose of DB_UNIQUE_NAME in LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST parameter?

      3) If archivelog gap happens standby db goes out of sync with the primary database. What does out of sync actually mean?

      4) Primary DB knows where to transport redo data based on the location mentioned in LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n of Primary DB. Am I correct in my understanding?

Thanks. Any help will be highly appreciated

          What version of Oracle?

          What OS are you using?

If you are new to Oracle why start with Data Guard?

What document have you read so far?

            Hi,

My Physical Standby Database version is 10.2.0.4 and OS is Sun Solaris Sparc.

I have gone through Oracle 10gR2 docs: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/toc.htm

            Thanks

              1) How to find archive log gap from Primary Database site?
              Use V$ARCHIVE_GAP from standby database

              http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/dynviews_1014.htm

For primary database Use this view v$archived_log to know the sequence and compare it with sequence present in v$log_history of standby database.
              2) Do I need the DB_UNIQUE_NAME when setting the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 ? What is the purpose of DB_UNIQUE_NAME in LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST parameter?
DB_UNIQUE_NAME is used to distinguish between primary and standby database and it is also helpful when you configure Dataguard broker.

              http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e17023/concepts.htm#i1012797

              3) If archivelog gap happens standby db goes out of sync with the primary database. What does out of sync actually mean?
In your query SYNC Means there is difference in archive sequence of primary and standby database.
              4) Primary DB knows where to transport redo data based on the location mentioned in LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n of Primary DB. Am I correct in my understanding?
              Yes.
