    Usage of OLAP

    user9134685
      Hi

Are there any guidelines as to when one should use OLAP versus the relational aggregate tables.

      1. Volume of base data to be aggregated and retention period
      2. Response times required by reporting
      2. aggregate at the lowest grain of all dimensions?
      3. Use only if it can be refreshed at partition level

      etc.

I work on OBIEE as the reporting tool and my plan was to use PCT based Cube based MV for aggregates (at the lowest grain) and the time series measure being calculated by OBIEE.

e.g. if we take a retail domain, typical sales aggregation, would it cause volume and refresh times issue when partitions in the cube increase with time?
      OR
if we take a health domain, typical waiting times, would it cause volume and refresh times issue when partitions in the cube increase with time?

      Thanks

Well .. this is a larger discussion, which will require understanding your data, reporting requirements, amount of data, hardware and other resources available, SLA for cube loading and for reporting etc.

The aggregation strategy (in any Oracle-based-DW) should involve Oracle-OLAP and calculations.

If you are new to Oracle-OLAP then do listen to these 3 presentations on Oracle-OLAP, done by Bud Endress from OLAP Development team.
