The process of coping redo log files to archive log is called archiving. Archive log files are used for point in time recovery. i.e if there is a loss of data and backup does not contain upto date information.(i.e backup data is sundays and we lost data on tue). then we need to restore the backup and apply these archive logs so that recovery is complete.

during recovery all the archive logs data gets applied to backup and thus database is uptodate.
