sql developer connection to sql db using dynamic port

    1010209
I need to setup a connection to a sql db using dynamic ports. Is this possible? I cannot connect with sql developer when specifying port 1433 which the dba told me to use. I have dynamic port selected in my administrative tools\odbc connections and I am able to make the connection but when I deselect dynamic port and specify 1433 the connection fails. Can anyone offer any help with this? SQL Developer version is 3.2.20.09. SQL DB is on a Windows 2008 server. I am running Windows 7 Pro 32bit.

          Hi,

A quick search on SQL Server named instances with dynamic ports turned up this general explanation on how a client program finds the port:
          http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2661/how-to-connect-to-a-sql-server-named-instance/

For all I know, SQL Developer may not be aware of SQL Server's Listener/Browser Service. The UI seems to require that the user provide a port, so getting support for named instance probably starts with the creation of a Feature Request on the SQL Developer Exchange here:
          http://sqldeveloper.oracle.com/

          Corrections welcome.

          Hope this helps,

Also, armed with the explanation, you might want to ask the DBA about that recommendation to use port 1433.
