Following and Tracking are important functions to monitor community activity and discussion updates. According to the Jive Documentation, Tracking is for crucial need-to-know and Following is for keeping up in a looser sense. (Following vs. Tracking)
The difference between Following and Tracking may seem difficult to comprehend. However, the concept is relatively simple considering that these functions use different notification channels and provide different information management options. Following and Tracking set the importance and urgency of the information being requested. The decision which way to choose is up to you.
All community activity, such as starting a discussion and responding, or even pressing the Like button, is recorded in the activity stream. The community-wide activity can be reviewed under All Activity by clicking on Dashboard in the forum banner. Followed Activity filters the activity stream showing only the information you are following. (Example)
Tracking routes activity to your personal Communications page. You can open the Communication page by clicking on Communications in the forum banner. The Communications link has an unread counter and the page allows you to filter unread information, similar to an e-mail inbox. Information that you route to the Communications page using Tracking is considered need-to-know or urgent. (Example)
To follow a place or discussion, open the page you wish to follow and click the green Follow button. To stop Following, click the Following button. To get an overview of what you are currently following, click on your username in the forum banner and choose Content or Places. Select the Following filter to see what you are following. You can click the gear wheel and select Following to stop Following. (Example)
To start tracking a community place, choose Overview and click on Track in Communications from the list of available Actions. Respectively, to start tracking a specific discussion, open the discussion and do the same. To stop Tracking, select Stop Tracking. When you start or join a discussion, content tracking of the discussion is enabled automatically. (Example)
You can configure an e-mail policy in your account preferences to automatically receive a separate e-mail for all Tracking and Following notifications. Select the pull-down menu next to your username shown in the forum banner and choose Preferences. (Example)
Note that Following or Tracking a busy forum can generate a lot of of e-mails. Alternatively, you can enable e-mail notifications for a specific forum or discussion activity using the Receive email notifications action, regardless of whether or not you are following or tracking the information.
