How I can emulate Solaris 10 sparc on a Virtual Machine?

1031180Aug 13 2013 — edited Aug 14 2013

Hi for all.

Guys, I need to emulate an environment Solaris 10 in my job. We have an application that just run in this kind of environment. But, I found some problems when I try to install Solaris 10 Sparc on Virtual Box. I think that the problem is the type of architecture that are differents.

So, someone knows a way to emulate Solaris 10 sparc architecture on a Virtual Machine. Doesn't matter the Virtual Machine application (Virtual Box, VMWare, etc..). Somebody Help me?

Which exact version of Solaris 10 ? u6 and higher are supported for install on Virtualbox - https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#guestossupport

Pl elaborate on what "some problems" are - exact error codes and messages, along with details of all of the steps you performed would be helpful

HI Srini_Chavali

I'm using the Solaris 10 u11.

In fact, Virtual Box supports Solaris u6 and higher. I have an installation of Virtual Box running Solaris x86. But, the problem occurs when I try to create a Virtual machine to work with Solaris 10 Sparc architecture.

The errors that appears on the screen are:

"No bootable medium found! System Halted" and "FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted"

This error occurs just with Architecture sparc.

Hi,

The architectures are different and as a result the intel motherboard (x86) will not support a SPARC Solaris OS. For you to proceed with the solaris installation you will have to only use solaris 86 version and not the sparc edition.

But in fact going through some sites, I found a small hack and have not tried personally. Please see if this helps!

The error message indicates that the VM cannot access your CD/DVD drive - is the CD/DVD drive bootable on your host ?

Another option is to use a pre-built Solaris 10 VM that can be imported into Virtualbox - see the download and instructions here - Oracle VM Templates for Oracle VM VirtualBox

The Sparc version of Solaris 10 can't run on Virtual box. The Host is a x86 computer. Use the X86 version of Solaris 10 for testing. That will work just fine.

Oracle has had another VM solution That can run on Sparc servers and host Sparc Solaris.

Solution: Buy a Sun SPARC Workstation
