    Restoring database from standby cold backup

    Hassan R. Khan

      Hi All,

      We are using Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 on SunOS 5.11.

      We have a primary and physical standby database.

      We used to take cold backup from standby database. Now we want to restore the standby cold backup and make it as primary (building scenarion that our primary and standby database have been crashed and we only have cold backup of standby?.

      We have performed following steps.

      1. Copy cold backup on server

      2. Mount the standby database

      3. perform the pint in time recover by issuing fllowing command

        recover standby database until cancel;

      4. Applied some archived files and then CANCEL

      5. Issue following command to change the mode as "TO PRIMARY",

      alter database recover managed standby database finish; and received followig error (alert log file)

      "Sun Aug 18 14:39:42 2013

      Logmerger died, shutting down parallel recovery slaves

      Sun Aug 18 14:40:16 2013

      Recovery Slave PR00 died

      Sun Aug 18 14:40:24 2013

      Recovery interrupted!"

          I don't think this is an error. It is just the message you received in your alert log when use the following command.

          Did you recieve any error while you executed alter database recover managed standby database finish; on your oracle cmd promt. If yes then post the same

          after this you need to use 'alter database activate standby database;' to open your database in read write mode.

            We have successfully restore the database and swithover the status to primary after performing following steps:

            1. Copy cold backup on server
            2. Mount the standby database
            3. Perform the point in time recovery by issuing fllowing command
              1. recover standby database until cancel;
              2. Applied some archived files and then CANCEL
            4. Clear Standby Redo Log Files
              1. alter database clear logfile group <Group Number>;
            5. Finish Standby recovery
              1. alter database recover managed standby database finish;
            6. Issue following command to change the mode to "PRIMARY",
              1. alter database commit to switchover to primary with session shutdown;
            7. Open database
              1. Alter database open;
            8. Switch the redo log files
              1. Alter system switch logfile;
            9. Restart the database

            Earlier we had missed step # 4.

            Regards,
