RMAN would not be deleting the obsolete backups unless you specify it explicitly.
Hence, to delete obsolete backups, use the "delete obsolete" command.
RMAN would be deleting the backups physically and would be updating this information.
In the first case, Oracle would automatically delete obsolete backup pieces IF you are using an FRA -- the deletion occurs ONLY IF the FRA usage approaches 98%. Not otherwise.
