I recently purchased as used Sunfire X4100 M2 server. My intentions are to familiarize my self with servers in general from an administrator perspective. I have used servers in the past from an "end user" perspective, but, that is the extent to my experience.
Can anyone point me in a 'fast track' direction so I can begin experimenting.
I have only the server and power cables to the server, with that being said, here is what I am trying to accomplish.
1) connect my laptop to the server:
Do i need a KVM switch, can i just connect using a CAT5 cable, or perhaps I am way off here. Please advise?
2) Put the server on my home network. I have a consumer router (if that matters), not a small business router.
3) Access the server from the network and perform administrative tasks.
4) Access the server from outside my home network.
Also, are there any other peripherals I need to set up this server - again, it will mainly be for development and experimentation for learning purposes.
Any direction provided would be appreciated.
Question 1. You don't need a KVM to manage this server. It has a service processor installed and you can in this case use it to install the OS and to manage the hardware. The initial setup from the ILOM should be done through the serial interface.
For questions 2 and 3, it depends which OS will be used.
And for question 4, you should check the manuals of your network infrastructure and ask your internet provider if you can open some ports. You should also check if you have a public IP address or if you should use a dynamic DNS server to easier memorize your "network" address.
