Unrequired 'authentication popup' in a Java Web Start application and Java 7

My application is a JWS, which starts with a "custom" login form, accepting the user username and password. Credentials are set inside the http request and sent to the server:

BindingProvider provider = (BindingProvider) result;

provider.getRequestContext().put(BindingProvider.USERNAME_PROPERTY, username));

provider.getRequestContext().put(BindingProvider.PASSWORD_PROPERTY, password));

My server resources are protected with BASIC authentication. Clicking in a "Login" button client tries the login in my server side application.

In the client side application I catch the exception that the server login module could return if a user inserts wrong credentials.

However, using a JDK 7 (u21 and subsequent), if the user sets wrong credential an "Authentication required" popup are shown, asking to insert again new credential.

This is an annoying behaviour , because I would like to show again my own login form, not the "basic" one, catching the exception returned by the server.

Using Java 6 this problem is not encountered.

Suggestions for this troubleshooting should be very appreciated.
