A good step-by-step for new guys. I still refer to this only. Please go through this atleast 2 times and understand what all has to be done. Get your self comfortable with the steps before performing any.

thanks for your reply.i have rman backups and i want to use this rman backups to refresh DEV instance with PROD instance.
Let me help you with the basic steps :
asssuming you have backup of database , archivelogs and controlfile follow these steps on the DEV instance after getting the backup on a mount point in DEV.
$ ORACLE_SID=<name you want to give>; export ORACLE_SID
$ sqlplus / as sysdba
connect to rman auxiliary
DUPLICATE DATABASE TO DB11G
BACKUP LOCATION '/source/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G'
This will create the control files , then mount , then restore and recover and then finally open the db for you.
