    11i on XP installation problem

    98488
      Installation failed. The error message in the log file shows:

      C:\DOCUME~1\John\LOCALS~1\Temp>echo "Cannot install service for database ORACLE_HOME\n";

      "Cannot install service for database ORACLE_HOME\n";

      There was an error while running the command - g:\oracle\visdb\9.2.0\temp\VIS_myPC\adrun9i.cmd APPS APPS
      The process tried to write to a nonexistent pipe.

      RW-50004: Error code received when running external process.

      ==============

      Can anybody help me to fix this problem?

      Thanks

          Your system was not 'clean' with previous failed installation. Re-install the suite after cleaning up all Oracle related registry, environment variables, shortcuts from start>programs, folder at program files. Don't forget to reboot and find no more Oracle in those areas.

          Did you create a virtual DNS for xp?

          Good luck.

            Thanks.

            Yes, I created a virtual DNS before I installed 11i.

              Hi, I re-installed the 11i again on a clean win2003 system, but the same problem exists. The installation hang up during checking the system status after finished all 5 steps. On the command window, it shows:

              I don't know what's wrong with it, but one thing is certain that this error has nothing to do with the OS.

              Configuration of my PC :
              CPU : AMD 900MHz
              Memory : 512M
              HD : 80G (for OS) + 120G (for 11i)

              Is it because the memory is too limited?

                What are your pre-installation configurations with Visual C++, JDK, MKSnt, gnumake.exe and link.exe files?
                Since you installed the suite on a server,did you go to Active Directory to create DNS?
                At prompt, what happens if pinging your PC name? Is there a domain name after pc name?

                  Sorry, I didn't make it clear in the previous post.

                  I followed most of the steps listed on How to Install 11.5.10 on Win XP .

                  The environment is Win 2003 Server on a PC AMD, 0.9GHz with 512M Memory and 80 GB + 120 GB hard drive
                  1) MKS(7.5) Installed directory is C:\MKS
                  2) VC++ 6(with service pack 5) c:\VC98, others Visual Studio stuff installed to default directory. (I copied link.exe from c:\VC98\bin to c:\windows\system32)
                  3) make-3.79.1 (I copied gnumake.exe to c:\MKS\mksnt folder)
                  4) jdk1.5.0, jre1.5.0 installed. c:\jdk15\bin was added to PATH.
                  5) hosts
                  127.0.0.1 xxx.yyy.com
                  6) TCP/IP properties
                  DNS suffix is yyy.com

                  At prompt, pinging PC name (xxx) is ok, the domain name (yyy.com) shows up. Pinging xxx.yyy.com is also fine.

                  After waiting for 12 hours, I have to stop the installation. But from the log file I am not sure whether the installation has finished or not. Below is the bottom part of the log file.

                      I think there is something wrong with the path setup:

                      What is os drive? If it is at C drive, did you install those programs at c by default? If so, the default locations for mks is c:/mks, vc is c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual C++ Toolkit 2003, jdk is c:\Program Files\java\jdk1.5.0 and oui is c:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory. During pre-installation setup, did you enter the right locations? Check "configure..." file to find out the setup.

                      If your os is at d drive, it's ok to install those programs at different drive except oui. But you have to map them right at pre-installation. It seems you installed those programs at c drive, but you did not change accordingly at pre-installation setup. The log file shows those programs are at D drive.

                      What happens if you enter gnumake or link at prompt?

                      Your PC memory and speed is OK, I installed OK once at a PC of 366mhz/300m memory that only took much longer time.

                        Thank you very much for your help, 70181.

                        I have two os drives, c drive for winxp and d drive for win2003. Since the installation on XP failed, I wanted to try it on win2003, but still keep the xp for other uses. I installed all related programs ( MKS, VC++6, JDK, make ) on d drive. The suit was installed on G drive, which is ~94 GB (I want to install the demo database). All pre-installation checks passed. When installation hang up there, the system memory has only ~26M left.

                        At prompt, entering gnumake I got:
                        D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>gnumake
                        gnumake: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

                        entering link I got:

                            Hi,

                            Could you please tell me where the pre-installation conguration log file locates? I just have the installation log.

                            The path in my installation log is long because of the Microsoft Visual Studio part. Should I remove it?

                            Thanks,

                              The defualt location should be at documents and settings>login_user folder>local settings>temp>configure.txt. This is a hidder file/folder if you did not change the setting at tools>folder option>view.

                              I usually move this file to my document folder for easy lookups. Just check Oracle installation guide for more info:Page 2-17(r1159ins.pdf) at startCD>Disk1>doc.

                              No need to change those path locations right now.

                                I can't find the file in the folder. I have chosen unhidden the file/folder.

                                Since I got the message "java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1" on the 'Rapid Install - do not close' prompt window, is this possible that the path is too long?
