Parsing String directly in AQ using a D3L or DTD

I have a setup where a java service pulls messages from legacy system as a fixed length string, converts it to xml and puts it in the AQ to be picked up by an AQ adapter for processing. The step of preparing the xml is unnecessary as OAI is capable of parsing fixed length strings using a D3L.

I want to be able to put the raw string from the legacy system on to the AQ and have the adapter parse and process it. I contacted oracle support and they said it is possible using DTD's but would be unable to give me a sample use case, as they don't have one.

Has anyone in this forum attempted this or something similar? I would appreciate any suggestion, if possible a use case. As a note, i could write a custom adapter, but want to keep the process custom code free.
