        Hello Srinivas

        Thank you for your response.

I never pursued the problem with the failure of Oracle 10g standard installation. OTN forum was very unhelpful. Apparently no developer ever sets foot there unless it is a beta like here.

        Yes I did kill Idriver.exe.

I have cleaned up the install per your URL. I also cleaned up the registry.

To be on the safe side I downloaded the Oracle XE software once again tonight.

The version of msi.dll is 3.1.4000.2435.

Per an earlier post in this forum I determined that this is the correct version.

The version for msiexec.exe is 3.1.4000.1823.

Despite all this I am still experiencing the same problem. It is stuck in the 'creating and starting services for Oracle Database 10g Express Edition'.

Per your suggestion I went to the services panel and only found one service 'OracleXETNSListener' which was set to 'automatic' but was not running.

When I tried to start this manually I got an error message 'the service started and then stopped '

There were no error messages in the event log. Funnily the event viewer stated that Oracle 10 Express installation was completed successfully even though the dialog box was still up.

What I did not tell you in the past was that on one of my many attempts I had let the installation alone at this stage for the whole night.

It was still stuck at the same stage when I got up in the morning.

I am afraid we have not made any head way with this problem.

          Naveen,
I was in the exact same boat as you and once i did the following, I got a clean install.
          1. Removed all Oracle components from my registry.
          2. Deleted any Oracle services.
          3. downloaded the latest msi from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/
          4. ran the msi update
          5. reboot.
          6. run the oracle xe installer.
          worked like a charm.
i have used this process on 4 different xp machines now and they have all installed without a problem. At least two of them exibited the same service creation failure prior to the scrubbing described above.

I know you have check your msi version but perhaps the msi distribution from MS does more then meets the eye.

Thanks very much. I will try this out and let you all know.

              Hi Srinivas

I am not sure if this matters, when I got stuck in the XE installation I noticed two processes 'Idriver.exe' and 'IdriverT.exe'. The former was running under my account (I am a local administrator) and the latter was running as a system account.

We now believe that the problem is with the OracleXETNSListener service not starting correctly. We need to work out why this is happening on your environment.

Naveen - I believe you get to the point in the install where the OracleXETNSListener service is created but not running ? Immediately at this point, can you please go to the Event Viewer, and either clear out all log events, or at least note which ones are on the top of the list.

Please then try to restart the OracleXETNSlistener service. If you get any new entries in the even viewer (check all the logs), then please post what these errors are.

No difference. Same problem at the same stage in the installation.

Following are messages in chronological order in the system log of the event viewer:

                  1) The OracleXETNSListener service was successfully sent a start control.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

                  2) The OracleXETNSListener service entered the running state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

3)The OracleXETNSListener service entered the stopped state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Cheers. I'm talking to development to see if we can set something to get more trace information. In the meantime, if we go back to first principles, the service is try to start, and probably bind to a given port (1521). This seems to be not working. So some questions

                    1) Is there anything 'funny' about the network on this system ? Is it a stand alone box, or on a corporate network ? Are you dialed up over VPN when you do this? Do you have anything running that could be blocking/intercepting network calls etc.

                    2) Is there anything 'funny' about the user you are logged on as ? Do you have admin privileges. Is the user assigned the ora_dba group (should have been done as part of the install)

                    3) Do you have a listener.ora file in the oracle directory ? If so, please paste the contents

                    4) Does netstat -a from the command line show something else listening on port 1521 ?
                    • 37. Re: Installation Failing on Windows XP PRo

Naveen - if you have an oraclexe directory, please find the network/admin directory.
In the listener.ora file add the following line
                      TRACE_LEVEL_LISTENER=16

Then try starting the service again.

If we are lucky there may be some files created in network/trace

If they are short please post them here. If long, please upload.

                        We have identified the problem.

Basically it's a race condition that we are not seeing on our machines here. During the install, we start, stop, and restart the listener service within a short period of time. On some versions of Windows, on faster machines, the service restarts before the OS has freed up the port from the previous invocation of the same service. Hence the restart gets an "Address already in use" error and fails, the installer spins waiting for the restart to come back.

You can verify if this is the problem, as you should have a listener.log file in the directory at the time of the hang, with the error "Address already in use"

We will fix this in production. There is no easy workaround in the current beta, except the following may work
                        1) Immediately at the 'Creating Services' message go to the Control Panel and manually start the OracleXETNSListener service. This may wake the Installer up
                        2) If this doesn't work, try the install again -without- cleaning up. Set the OracleXETNSListener service in Control Panel to manual start before the re-install.
                        3) I know this sounds strange, but if 1) and 2) don't work, then try installing at the same time as something else heavy is running and consuming CPU.

                          No such luck.

I had the CPU running at 100 % (I was watching a movie) and got the same error message when attempting to manually start the service 'OracleXETNSListener'.

I got a trace file from the listener though. I am pasting the contents below:

Thanks for the trace file. We will look at it. Can you also see what is in the log file at C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\network\log\listener.log and if it is short, paste it here as well. If it is big, let me know and I will tell you how to upload it.

user456418 - we are still trying to diagnose this particular problem. If you are still having problems, can you please provide the following

A netstat output ("netstat -a" on command line) from the machine
                              where this problem occurs.

A registry dump of the oracle key -- in regedit,
under HKLM\Software, right-click on "Oracle" and select Export.

When you have them, let me know, and I will tell you how to upload them

                                Hi Mark

                                The problem still exists.

I will try to collect the information you need by tonight.

If you could post the directions on the upload, we could expedite this further.

                                Thanks
