Although its not supposed to work, it can. At least on the Professional version, its not intended for any of the Home platforms.
Quite a few blogs mention the registry fix for the missing key file e.g.
Also the XE install program is older than Win7 as well- running the install program with the right click/run as Admin trail tends to work better as well.
Don't waste your time. As others on this forum will tell you, it appears you can install on a 64-bit system, but if you do and check your alert log (error log) for the database, you will find the following error repeated every couple of seconds:
OER 7451 in Load Indicator : Error Code = OSD-04500: illegal option specified
O/S-Error: (OS 1) Incorrect function. !
If you research this error on Oracle's support site, it will take you to Doc ID 1060806.1 which gives the reason for the error. Bottom line is that Oracle does not support installing a 32-bit database on a 64-bit Windows operating system.
