just curious - did you enable I2C On the Pi?
Yes, if I issue more /etc/modules it contains:
and my /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf is:
# blacklist spi and i2c by default (many users don't need them)
I've rebooted my RPi several times. Is there anything else I've missed?

This is strange, assuming you are using a fresh copy of Raspbian Wheezy, and that you have enabled i2c on the Pi, check that:
1) Triple check your connections to the module is correct from the homework.
2) Check your solder is not touching each other from the pins.
Other than that if all is good, perhaps its hardware related.
