Do you have a default route established in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth1?
It would look like this with the specifics for your default route.
default x.x.x.x dev ethx
x.x.x.x/x via x.x.x.x
There can only be one default gateway, which is used whenever you address a TCP/IP address for which your system has no network or routing information. A system normally has routing information for all the TCP/IP networks that it has configured. What is an alternative static route? Perhaps you are looking for source policy routing. There are plenty of examples on the web. For instance the first that came up when I searched in Google: http://sysadminsjourney.com/content/2009/04/15/doing-simple-source-policy-routing-centos/ or if you want to add a static route: Red Hat Linux Static Routing Configuration.
