Java keeps trying to connect to the internet and requests proxy credentials

Java 7 update 55, Windows server 2012 and Windows 7, internet access through proxy server only. The java application being run does not require internet access, but it keeps requesting proxy credentials. If I cancel the credentials request the application works properly. What is going on?
