    VM Server 3.2.7 keeps restarting

      Hi Guys, I have been seeing my main VM server restarting every few days. Where do I check to see if it is a guest issue or hardware issue?

          Hi,

           

          I can't think of any guest issue, that could crash the VM server host, other than messing around with pci-passthrough. This could possibly crash your VM server host, if you'd screw that up.

           

          On the other hand - most VM server crashes are due to some server pool fs issue. Anyway, the places to look for such things are:

           

          /var/log/messages (or run dmesg)

          /vart/log/ovs-agent.log

            Currently my poolfs is residing in a iSCSI LUN. Is it better if I move to local server storage?

                Hi,

                the complete messages log after the reboot is not that useful…

                Better show the messages log from around one of the reboots, along with the ovs-agent.log at that time, too.

                 

                As your pool fs resides on an iSCSI LUN - which is absolutely okay - it's most likely, that you'll have issues with that and that OCFS2 will fence your host.

                That said,  can you also show the o2cb settings from /etc/sysconfig/o2cb? OCFS2 and iSCSI require a decent look at the timeouts for the heartbeats, especially if you have setup multipathing.

                 

                Deopending on the load of your storage/network you might run into a situation where the OCFS2 heartbeats get lost and that can lead to such behaviour.

                      So, your o2cb config looks ok. Seems to be the default one. I have found to have better stability, with O2CB_HEARTBEAT_THRESHOLD=91, but that's because I actually do have multipathing working and this covers some iSCSI/multipathing timeouts. If you're only running with single paths to your storage, than this should be not relevant.

                       

                      Next up… the mesages log. Since there's no sign of anything prior before the restart, I strongly believe, that OCFS2 has fenced your host. Unfortuanetly, I was wrong about the ovs-agent.log. OCFS2 errors will not be logged there. I think that you'll have to tell OCFS2 to log more to syslog.

                       

                      You can do this by enabling debugging inside OCFS2 using debugfs.ocfs2 as described in this document:

                      I'd say, starting with

                       

                      debugfs.ocfs2 -l HEARTBEAT allow

                       

                      might be a good start. It will spill out  debug logs about the O2CB heartbeat to syslog and you should be able to see, whether it throws errors at the next time your OVM server reboots unexpectedly.

                          my topo is like this: 1 server, 1 main qnap NAS hosting the vm files repo with 2 other iscsi targets, and 1 backup qnap NAS hosting the poolfs repo currently. Does this mean multipathing to you?

                            No, multipathing means, that you have two different paths to the same storage. So, if you have only one server, than the most likely cause is, that your OVM server has heartbeat issues, either with the repo or the pool fs. Are the "other" 2 iSCSI targets on the main QNAP excessively used or sometimes cause a high load on the QNAP?

                              No excessive use on any of the iscsi targets yet. We are only in the testing phase of the project rollout.

                                I almost forgot… you can also setup OCFS2 to halt your host, instead of just panicing it. There is some config, that can do this. You can find the discussion here:

                                If your host reboots even with that setting enabled, you are likely having another issue, that is not appearantly visible.

                                    You mentioned about risks involved and rather Roddy do not do it.

                                    Is there any good read up on the fencing part and what does it do?
