Recover Database after OS has crashed and formatted, while RMAN backup and archivelog are still available

I have a ORACLE_HOME directory on the same drive as my Operating system. But my RMAN backup (including control file backup) and archivelogs are in a different drive.

My problem is my operating system had crashed and i had no choice but to  formatted that drive. My other drives are still intact so I am left with my RMAN backups and archivelogs.

My question is how do i recover back my database using just the RMAN backups and archivelogs.

I have read a few articles on creating a DUPLICATE database, but how do i go about it ??

Are DUPLICATE database made only when the target database is active ?? Or are just the RMAN backups and archivelogs sufficient ?
