What is a database. How do I connect to one?

Hello,

I am trying to make a first connection so that I can start learning SQL.

I am using the latest MAC OSX.

I know that the field "connection name" can be anything.

I do not know what to enter for "username" much less "password".

I also do not know what to enter for "hostname", "port", or "SID".
