Sluggish response displaying a varchar larger than 1637 on OSX

I am running version Version 4.0.3.16 with jdk1.7.0_51 on OSX 10.9.5.

Some of our tables have large columns and only when the length of the data is over 1637 characters the response becomes very sluggish, some data is not visible and sqldeveloper in general becomes unusable.

After closing the result window normal performance returns.

Watching the java process with top shows that the state may become "stuck" and when closing the result window it changes back to sleeping.

There are also log messages like the following

      SEVERE16201424oracle.dbtools.raptor.backgroundTask.RaptorTaskManager$1can't create offscreen surface

I've tried jdk1.8 with similar results.

Some of the memory information is as follows.

      java.memory.heap.init134217728
      java.memory.heap.max746061824
      java.memory.heap.used107939184
      java.memory.nonheap.init2555904
      java.memory.nonheap.max-1
      java.memory.nonheap.used155644784

I haven't seen any other questions related to this problem, so I assume it is my environment.

Are there any suggestions as to what I might do to alleviate this?
