>>error occurred that an dll couldn't be executed
do you remember what the actual error message was?
you can try deleting the roaming profiles application data directory for SQL Developer and try again
Thanks Jeff! That solved the problem.
I have a similar problem on Windows 10.I've tried deleting the SQL Developer App Data folders, but the application still exits without any error message during startup.
launch it from the bin directory in the cmd window/shell
report any messages in the cmd window here
The problem is I don't get any error message at all. I have tried removing the %APPDATA% folders, running it as both administrator and my regular user. JDK is btw C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_51.
send me a screenshot of your cmd window please, after you've started it
you can also edit sqldeveloper.conf and change the last line for it to load debug.conf vs nondebug.conf
I have tried switching to the debug.conf file, and the only difference is the "loading java assets" log message in the cmd window. There are no other error messages, so a screen shot provides no valuable information.
>>but the application still exits without any error message during startup
Do you get the Splash screen?
Yes, but it closes after 1/5 of the progress bar.
Delete the app data system directory again
Go to a cmd window, cd to the \bin directory
run the sqldeveloper.exe from there
send us a full dump of the output from that window
I did the following:
- Remove all sqldeveloper folders from %appdata%.
- Copied the sqldeveloper installation folder to my local user folder - thought maybe it was a permission problem.
- Edited sqldeveloper.conf and set configuration to debug.
- started sqldeveloper from %HOMEPATH%/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper/bin
- Still no output log :-(
I thought maybe there was some detailed trace available from sqldeveloper, but I could not find any. I also checked the Windows event log, but could not find anything.
I actually managed to get it running. I downloaded the version with JDK embedded, deleted the
/Sunfolders to get rid of any Java related settings. Now sqldevelopers starts and I am one happy Developer.
I got this error messages when running sqldeveloper.exe for the first time.

I had tried deleting the 'SQL Developer' and 'sqldeveloper' folder in the AppData and also the Oracle and Sun directory as mentioned in other posts, but still got the above message. Any suggestions? I am running Windows 10. Just downloaded sqldeveloper-188.8.131.52.64-x64.zip today and tried to run it. The download includes jdk 8
