Patching order for 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4 for R12.1.3 database

    User426388

As part of the database upgrade from 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4 for R12.1.3 we are revewing the following note

MOS Note 1645862.1 : Things to Consider Before Upgrading to 11.2.0.4 to Avoid Poor Performance or Wrong Results

      As per this note

For best results, install the latest 11.2.0.4 PSU as described in Document 756671.1, as it fixes many issues not listed in this note. Install the patches listed here for the relevent PSU:

And the first patch to be considered is

Patch 21765124 for 11.2.0.4.4 Document 18255105.8 Patch for upgrade scripts to identify histograms affected by fix of bug 15898932

NB: Apply before running the 11.2.0.4 upgrade script. There is no benefit to applying later on.

Document 19855835.8 Upgrade slow when reorganizing large stats history tables

NB:Apply before running the 11.2.0.4 upgrade script. There is no benefit to applying later on.

From the above description, its required to apply the patch before we run the upgrade script.

And This patch has "19121551" CPUOCT2014 as pre-req

so we need to confirm the order of applying the patches

      1) Install 11.2.0.4 software

      2) Apply Additional patches on 11.2.0.4 Doc ID 1058763.1 from Step 8

      3) Apply patch 19121551

      4) Apply patch 21765124

      5) Upgrade the database?

Also.As we are anyway applying the July 2015 CPU patches "Combo OJVM PSU 11.2.0.4.4 and Database PSU 11.2.0.4.7 (Patch 21150851)" does it make more sense to apply 11.2.0.4.7 instead of 11.2.0.4.4 PSU in the above sequence?

      1) Install 11.2.0.4 software

      2) Apply Additional patches on 11.2.0.4 Doc ID 1058763.1 from Step 8.

      3) Apply patch 19121551 ==> Should we consider July 2015 CPU patch as its cumulative

      4) Apply patch 21765124

      5) Upgrade the database?

Also, the patch 19121551 has below post steps

Loading Modified SQL Files into the Database

The following steps load modified SQL files into the database. For an Oracle RAC environment, perform these steps on only one node.

For each database instance running on the Oracle home being patched, connect to the database using SQL*Plus. Connect as SYSDBA and run the catbundle.sql script as follows:

      cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin

      sqlplus /nolog

      SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA

      SQL> STARTUP

      SQL> @catbundle.sql psu apply

      SQL> QUIT

The catbundle.sql execution is reflected in the dba_registry_history view by a row associated with bundle series PSU.

So, should we run the above post step after the DB upgrade?

          Hi,

          The correct/recommended order as follows:

          1) Install 11.2.0.4 software

          2) Apply patch 21150851 (OJVM+PSU Combo)

          3) Apply patch 21765124

          4) Apply Additional patches on 11.2.0.4 Doc ID 1058763.1 from Step 8.

          5) Upgrade the database

If you face any conflicts between the additional patches (step 4) and the PSU patch then follow this document for a replacement patch:

Database Patch Set Update Overlay Patches Required for Use with PSUs and Oracle E-Business Suite (Doc ID 1147107.1)

If any additional patch is already included in the PSU patch then just skip it.

One important thing, you do not have to perform the post installation tasks of patch 21150851 or 19121551 (in case you still want to apply it).

These actions are automatically executed during the database upgrade.

          Regards,

          Bashar
