Oracle 12c databases on OL7/xfs

Alex BardosNov 23 2015 — edited Nov 24 2015

Hello,

I am looking for input on how to interpret Doc ID 236826.1 in regards to support of Oracle database files (data, redo, control, ...) on xfs file systems when running OL7.1 (3.8.13-118.el7uek.x86_64). (posted an SR as well)

It states (1):

The current support includes ext2, ext3, ext4 (Oracle Linux 5.6 and later), btrfs and NFS-based storage systems (e.g. NetApp).

It also states (2):

When a problem is encontered, if a non-supported filesystem is being used for Oracle data, control and redo log files, Oracle will try to reproduce the problem on a supported and certified filesystem. If the problem does not reproduce on a certified filesystem, the specific filesystem / O/S vendor should be engaged for resolution.

In this case - using OL 7.1 (3.8.13-118.el7uek.x86_64) Oracle is the OS vendor as the FS vendor. So does the statement 2 above imply that Oracle does support Oracle data, control and redo log files on xfs file systems when running OL7.1?

XFS is also listed in the "Recommended File Systems" section. It states there that:

In summary, the recommended filesystems are:

  • Single node: Any filesystem that is supported by the Linux vendor. Note that any filesystem issues are need to be resolved by the Linux vendor.

The Linux vendor here being Oracle.

This is for standalone (no CDB/PDB) file system based (no ASM, raw partitions, etc.) databases.

Anybody using xfs for Oracle 12c databases? Any experience with support problems due to this stack?

(Also - we are using VMware, not the Oracle VM solution).

Thanks.

The database and XFS are not certified together. It should work, but if you ever have a problem you are on your own. Oracle's database support group can say "not our problem, because we don't support XFS" and Oracle's Linux support group can say "not our problem, because we don't support the database".

Does this matter? Probably not, as you are using VMware, which is not certified no matter what file system you use. The aphorism "might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb" springs to mind.

Hi Alex,

i guess all your questions are answered in MOS ID #1632127.1. We also discussed this on Twitter some time ago.

Yes, several of my clients are running 11g and 12c on XFS (OEL 6 and 7). No experience with support, because they had no issue until yet - just better I/O performance (in contrast to EXT)

Quoting Support Note 1304727.1

  • XFS - XFS is supported when using OL7 or RHEL 7. Oracle has not tested XFS with earlier versions of OL or RHEL.

FYI - Oracle Support's response to my SR: "As per the certification team, XFS with OL7 is supported for database."

This fact is also "kind of" expressed in the note pointed to by earlier in the thread: https://support.oracle.com/rs?type=doc&id=1304727.1

I am not sure why it has to be such a pain to get a clear, unambiguous answer to a question like this.

Thanks.
