    max(date) returning multiple rows instead of one

      the query ,

       

      select class_standard, subject , max(start_dt) from table_name where class_standard ='A' -  returns multiple rows

      I wanted to have maximum date record

       

      Can anyone help , what is the issue here?

          No - it doesn't return ANY rows in an Oracle database.

           

          That query has a syntax error since it includes the MAX function but does NOT have a GROUP BY clause.
