    Disk Dismount Automatically

    saeed.sh110

      Hi

I have Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 on Oracle linux 6.7.

My database is single instance and it on Archivelog moded .

      i have some directories :

      /fra , /undo-redo , /u01 , /oradata

"fra" and "undo-redo" was mounted on a disk , that is /dev/sdb .

After i want to merge a table or update a table with 100,000,000 records , after updating some of rows , the database is shutdown abnormally , because "/dev/sdb" is not accessible , but before this transaction it is ok and accessible .

      This alert log :

Try running dmesg to see the what has happened to the system. There may be a clue in the messages.

Also, see if you can at least view the device, fdisk -l /dev/sdb

What type of disk it it? Is it internal to your server or external? If external, is the disk still plugged in? Does it have power?

Update: Seems like your disk went offline. Could be hardware problem. Check the power connection.

            Dude!

            Are you using VirtualBox?

And what is your kernel version (uname -r)?

Thanks a lot about all reply

the dsmeg output is attaching to post now .

for your question ,  "Also, see if you can at least view the device, fdisk -l /dev/sdb "  , no i can not access to disk after update or merge but after server reboot , it is ok and database can start .

for this : "What type of disk it it? Is it internal to your server or external? If external, is the disk still plugged in? Does it have power?" , i have use a san storage and my database on a virtual machine (Vmware) .

              my kernel version is :

              3.8.13-68.3.4.el6uek.x86_64

                Dude!

Can you be more specific, such as exact VMware product name and version and how you interface the SAN storage? Are you using iSCSI? Are you mounting the SAN storage at your host system? What is your host system?

Looks like you attached the dmesg for the reboot. I was hoping to see the dmesg straight after you had the problem.

Anyway, your san disk somehow got disconnected and was remounted after a reboot. This disconnection is most likely beyond the control of the guest OS, so you will need to investigate that at VMWare host and/or SAN storage disk level. Check each of their logs to see if there are errors corresponding to when the disk got disconnected.

The OS log tells you that the disk device is offline. You will need to check why it is offline.

yes , this is my mistake .

I do not know why the disk mode is changing to offline after start merging

or updating . After reboot , all disks are ok and database can start .

Is it for OS bad configuration or SAN storage connection or none of them ?

Without looking at the SAN disk logs, it is hard to tell whether it is the problem, but an educated guess would say that the high load on the disk may have made it crash/stop so some settings may need to be tuned. In order to find out, you need to get access to the SAN disk configurations and logs. The SAN configuration may not be optimal for high disk writes or the bandwidth for the connectivity may be too low. Ask your admin who has access to those and he/she may be able to troubleshoot that part for you.

The guest operating system detects that the disk is offline.

This can have a lot of reasons, e.g.:

                              - bad driver for disk controller / fibre channel controller -> Did you check if you have the current version?

                              - bad cabling -> is the cabling to the SAN ok? Do the cables meet specs regarding signal quality, length, etc...?

                              - SAN controller issues? does SAN report any errors?

                              - and lots more

From my view you have to bring together your SAN admins, your VMware admins, etc.. and work together

                              on this issue.
