PUM Upgrade Image and Unicode

We are starting to plan a CS 9.0 to CS 9.2 upgrade project. I have a question about the PUM Upgrade Image and whether it can be used as the upgrade source for a non unicode database. I have been reading much information about PUM and upgrade procedures and came across Doc ID 1579720.1 yesterday. In this document it mentions that PUM Upgrade images cannot be used as the upgrade source for non unicode databases. This is the only document that I have read that mentions this information and I was wondering whether anyone had experience with this scenario. Should we be building a "classic" demo database to use as the upgrade source if we are upgrading a non unicode target?
