    Solaris 11.4 beta install and post install issues

    3247478

      First of all: I have no Solaris support so I cannot report found issues as regular SRs.

      It is really disappointing that Oracle did not open separated some separated BTS to track issues from the users which have no support.

      1) The issue with not enabled client/dns service.

      After install system using interactive mode using txt USB image, it is necessary to change IPS publisher.

      It is really sad that this is not described in some short document that people after installation must go to https://pkg-register.oracle.com/ and generate 11.4 beta repo key and certificate.

      Nevertheless, it isn't going to work as it is described in the https://pkg-register.oracle.com/register/product_info/11/. On this page is advice about execute

      $ sudo pkg set-publisher \
        -k ~/Desktop/pkg.oracle.com.key.pem \
        -c ~/Desktop/pkg.oracle.com.certificate.pem \
        -G "*" -g https://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/beta solaris

      This command will fail like in my case with:

      $ pkg set-publisher -k pkg.oracle.com.key.pem -c pkg.oracle.com.certificate.pem -G '*' -g https://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/beta solaris

      The origin URIs for 'solaris' do not appear to point to a valid pkg repository.

      Please verify the repository's location and the client's network configuration.

      Additional details:

      Unable to contact valid package repository: https://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/beta/

      Encountered the following error(s):

      Transport errors encountered when trying to contact repository.

      Reported the following errors:

        Framework error: code: E_MULTI_UNKNOWN_OPTION (6) reason: Couldn't resolve host 'pkg.oracle.com'

      URL: 'https://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/beta' (happened 4 times)

      Simple check:

      $ host pkg.oracle.com

      pkg.oracle.com is an alias for pkg.oraclegha.com.

      pkg.oraclegha.com has address 137.254.56.18

      So theoretically it should be OK however after a short investigation I found that client/dns service is not enabled.

      To fix this need to be done "svcadm enable client/dns"
      It is really good question why it is not ebabled because freshly installed Solaris 11.4 comes with "files dns" in hosts NSS map (in /etc/nsswitch.conf).
      If dns is in use in NSS client/dns service should be enabled OOTB. Isn't it?

      Did anyone tested in Oracle plain install and follow the instruction https://pkg-register.oracle.com/register/product_info/11/ ? IMO not ..

      2) During installation, I've chosen to install Solaris with English as default language and UK keyboard layout.

      I was a bit confused that after install many commands had been complaining about missing en_GB.UTF8 locale. Looks like install profile settings are not used to enable necessary facet during install.

      To fix this after installation needs to be done "pkg change-facet locale.en_GB=True"

      3) To make easier rest of the operations after install I've installed mc ("pkg install mc").

      Standard console terminal is working with TERM=sun-color and what is displayed after executing mc on console is total garbage.

      4) Broken terminfo database

      Even using man or less on console is really problematic so I've switched to start use freshly installed Solaris remotely from Linux.

      "stty -a" command shows that there is no cols, rows and few other in stty command output and by this all assumes that it is used an unknown terminal definition.

      Suddenly I found that many commands complained about missing 'linux' terminal definition.

      I've started investigating this using "truss infocmp" command and I found that ncurses library is looking for terminfo database in /usr/share/lib/terminfo however I found as well that this is not the place where linux terminal terminfo definition is installed.

      $ pkg search terminfo

      INDEX           ACTION VALUE                                                                                        PACKAGE

      basename        dir    usr/share/lib/terminfo                                                                       pkg:/system/data/terminfo@11.4-11.4.0.0.0.2.1

      basename        dir    usr/share/lib/terminfo                                                                       pkg:/system/data/terminfo/terminfo-core@11.4-11.4.0.0.0.12.2

      basename        link   usr/gnu/lib/terminfo                                                                         pkg:/library/ncurses@6.0.0.20170708-11.4.0.0.0.12.0

      pkg.description set    Extensive terminfo database entries describing capabilities of terminals and pseudoterminals pkg:/system/data/terminfo@11.4-11.4.0.0.0.2.1

      pkg.description set    Minimal terminfo database entries describing capabilities of terminals and pseudoterminals   pkg:/system/data/terminfo/terminfo-core@11.4-11.4.0.0.0.12.2

      pkg.fmri        set    solaris/system/data/terminfo                                                                 pkg:/system/data/terminfo@11.4-11.4.0.0.0.2.1

      So as it is possible to see here there are two terminfo databases. First in /usr/share/lib/terminfo and second one in /usr/gnu/lib/terminfo.

      ncurses library is looking for terminfo database in  /usr/share/lib/terminfo and the second one is never used.

      After rename "mv -f /usr/share/lib/terminfo{,.old}; ln -sf  usr/gnu/lib/terminfo  /usr/share/lib/terminfo" mc improved and after logout and login again I found that even less/aman commands improvd because they've started using proper terminfo definition.

      5) after "successful" base system image setup I've been trying to start using Solaris desktop. "pkg install solaris-desktop" does what expected but after "svcadm enable gdm" I've ended up in the situation where I have GUI login screen but mouse and keyboard are not responding.

      Definitely my mouse is correctly detected because in messages I see:

      Will try to investigate this issue later but what I found after enable gdm i that with static GUI screen I have 25% sys time used and my laptop fan is working with hihest possible speed and in kernel logs I see tons of lines like:

      I know that main Oracle and Solaris target is not the desktop user but what is the sense delivery desktop packages if many things related to GUI simple doe not work?

      Even as purely terminal based OS looks like Solaris is not well tested and is waaay behind what is possible to experience on Linux or *BSD.

      How Oracle is going to attract new Solaris customers if such simple things are BROKEN is a really pure mystery to me. Compare to what was possible to experience when first Solaris 10 has been released IMO in some areas which are affecting people trying to learn something about Solaris those issues are really HUGE obstacles and even if after those obstacles is possible to find some treasures not possible to have on any other possible to use OS.

      Instead progress on this entry-level area is possible IMO it is possible to see some regress

          Wow, that's a lot of stuff, more than any one person can answer, and it would be a lot easier to have separate threads for a bunch of it, but I'll try to cover what I can.

          First of all: I have no Solaris support so I cannot report found issues as regular SRs.

          It is really disappointing that Oracle did not open separated some separated BTS to track issues from the users which have no support.

          We considered it, but after having had almost no usage of the bug trackers we set up for previous beta releases, didn't think it would be worth the effort.

          It's covered in How to Access Oracle Solaris 11.4 Beta Packages from pkg.oracle.com and Installing Packages — Oracle Solaris 11.4 Beta.

          Strange, that facet should be set by default by the installer.

          Make sure svc:/system/hal:default is running and check the output of lshal for entries with input.x11_driver set to "mouse" and "kbd".

          Will try to investigate this issue later but what I found after enable gdm i that with static GUI screen I have 25% sys time used and my laptop fan is working with hihest possible speed and in kernel logs I see tons of lines like:

          Mar 22 02:32:55 domek-s genunix: [ID 296989 kern.warning] WARNING: [drm:register_dump:916] PGTBL_ER: 0x0

          Those lines are from using radeon X11 driver.

          Are you sure?  The drm kernel module is only used with Intel graphics on Solaris 11, not radeon.  Do you perhaps have an Intel GPU it's trying to use as well?

            It's covered in How to Access Oracle Solaris 11.4 Beta Packages from pkg.oracle.com and Installing Packages — Oracle Solaris 11.4 Beta.

            OK. Please go to this page and try to find that before registering repo key/cert needs to be enabled client/dns service otherwise registration will fail.

            Nevertheless please do not even think about update FAQ but enable this service OOTB (because in NSS settings hosts map is set to "files dns").

            Strange, that facet should be set by default by the installer.

            Plese just verify this.

            Make sure svc:/system/hal:default is running and check the output of lshal for entries with input.x11_driver set to "mouse" and "kbd".

            Will try this. Thx.

            If it will help it means that gdm service has the missing or wrong in gdm SMF manifest dependencies -> bug which needs to be fixed in gdm service definition.

            I've been using Solaris as desktop OS for many years before and only explanation why this was not cached before is that previously Sun/Oracle provided live GUI instal images which enabling hal service was probably part of the install procedure. Now there are only ai and txt images and looks like at least have been created some conditions to expose fact that something is missing here.

            Are you sure?  The drm kernel module is only used with Intel graphics on Solaris 11, not radeon.  Do you perhaps have an Intel GPU it's trying to use as well?

            Seems like you are right.

            Initially, in X server logs I found failing first radeon driver and by mistake I've taken this as consequence of this fail.

            It is not the latest hardware but even with latest Xorg under Linux it works without any problems.

            If may I suggest something which could be added default install AI profile. IMO it would be good to add yet another zfs volume mounted in /var/core add core files settings to write all those files under /var/core. Setting up default core files to something like "coreadm -i /var/core/core-%t-%f-%p would be really helpful.

            It is really annoying to find core files in random locations.

            May I ask when Oracle is it any plan release updated beta release before GA?

            A suggestion about 11.4 beta BTS: just please create empty repository like Solaris-11.4-beta with README.md and current FAQ under https://github.com/oracle.

            This is will be really enough to start collecting and tracking some bugs from users without support.

              If it will help it means that gdm service has the missing or wrong in gdm SMF manifest dependencies -> bug which needs to be fixed in gdm service definition.

              Just checked https://github.com/oracle/solaris-userland/blob/master/components/gnome/gdm/files/gdm.xml and in this file is:

              <dependency

                  name='hal'

                  grouping='optional_all'

                  restart_on='none'

                  type='service'>

                      <service_fmri value='svc:/system/hal' />

              </dependency>

              On first look seems like instead "grouping='optional_all'" should be "grouping='require_all'".

              Will try to verify this later and if it will correct solution will try to create PR with this correction.

                Hal started and now I'm writing this text from gnome on Sol 11.4.

                Next problems:

                1) After login over GUI it is not possible to register accounts. Looks like it would be good to add glib-networking to desktop-solaris consolidation

                2) Just found that spell checker in Firefox is underlining on red every word which I'm typing. Right-click on Firefox  -> Languages and .. for some reasons as default language is Spanish

                3) Just released that resolution is a bit odd (too low). A quick check and I know why. X11 by default started using vesa driver

                4) is it any plan to add chrome to distribution?

                5) There is no evolution in distribution

                root@domek-s:~# pkg search -r evolution

                INDEX      ACTION VALUE                  PACKAGE

                6) After login in home directory I found core file (really it would be good to add default coreadm settings to write all cores in /var/share/cores)

                11) libxml2 has well known CVE. You can take patch against this CVE from my Fedora commit https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/libxml2/c/ebf18892c23fc8df213b3969145c5f07cfde177f?branch=master

                If Fedora almost every day is fixed sometimes more than one CVE. I'm almost sure that many of them are not fixed in 11.4 beta and I'm not talking about desktop packages

                Number of the desktop packages in distribution is very short. Barely enough to start terminal and firefox  .. (firefox sucks )

                  We're working now on a refresh of the beta bits to a new build in the second half of April.  (No promises, but we're trying.)

                  A suggestion about 11.4 beta BTS: just please create empty repository like Solaris-11.4-beta with README.md and current FAQ under https://github.com/oracle.

                  This is will be really enough to start collecting and tracking some bugs from users without support.

                  Sorry, I can't create new repositories there - to get one created we have to go to our central github organization team and show approval for releasing code as open source, which we're not doing here, or justify an exception, which is difficult given we have proof that it's not been useful in past Solaris 11.x betas and we can't explain why this time would be different.

                    Hal started and now I'm writing this text from gnome on Sol 11.4.

                    Next problems:

                    1) After login over GUI it is not possible to register accounts. Looks like it would be good to add glib-networking to desktop-solaris consolidation

                    Sorry - can you explain this?  I'm not following - what's the relationship between glib-networking and account registration?  (Am I at least understanding correctly that you refer to the setup of google/facebook/etc. accounts in the initial setup screens?)

                    2) Just found that spell checker in Firefox is underlining on red every word which I'm typing. Right-click on Firefox -> Languages and .. for some reasons as default language is Spanish

                    Yeah, mine used to pick Ukranian often.  No one has ever figured out why, but uninstalling the packages with the dictionaries you don't need helps.

                    3) Just released that resolution is a bit odd (too low). A quick check and I know why. X11 by default started using vesa driver

                    That's the fallback if no better driver can attach.

                    4) is it any plan to add chrome to distribution?

                    No, there is no viable port of Chromium (the open source version of Chrome) to Solaris, and Google has never ported their commercial Chrome version either.

                    5) There is no evolution in distribution

                    Sorry, when we came up with the plan for the Solaris 11.4 desktop, we couldn't do everything, so we chose Thunderbird over Evolution as the email client to include, as that's what the majority of our users have been using.

                    6) After login in home directory I found core file

                    That should be fixed in beta refresh, as we've pulled in the necessary patch from upstream.

                    7) There are no gnome themes in distribution and there is no gnome session theme manager. I hate white/bright themes ..

                    We've included enough to be a viable enterprise server desktop, and leave adding things like themes as site-specific customizations by the few users who want them.  (We are working on integrating the gnome-shell browser plugin to make it easier to install things like the user themes extension from the gnome-shell extensions website.)

                    8) in distribution seems is quite old gcc 5.x so probably not possible to use LTO optimization (IIRC in 5.x still LTO optimization had many bugs)

                    Solaris 11.4 beta contains gcc 5.5 which was released in October 2017.

                    As you can see in our github repo, we've since added gcc 7.3, which should appear in our coming beta refresh next month.

                    9) In distribution is 1.5y old mc 4.8.17 (latest one is 4.8.20). I don't know .. maybe Solaris maintainers should implement the source package tar balls URLs monitoring tool to receive signals that some new version of some source packages has been released?

                    It is really not so hard to implement such automation using metadata already present in packages metadata

                    root@domek-s:~# pkg info mc | grep URL

                    Project URL: http://www.midnight-commander.org/

                    Source URL: http://www.midnight-commander.org/downloads/mc-4.8.17.tar.bz2

                    We implemented exactly such a system last year, based on the Anitya/release-monitoring.org service from Fedora.  You can see this via the COMPONENT_ANITYA_ID metadata in each component Makefile in the Userland gate.  But every update takes work, so we don't just instantly push through each one, but evaluate and prioritize them.  We admittedly have a significant backlog here, but we also are making updates regularly.

                    mc is also a bad example, as we choose to stop updating it and remove it instead, as you can see in the FOSS section of the End of Feature Notices list.  That removal didn't make the initial beta release, but has been done now for the beta refresh.

                    11) libxml2 has well known CVE. You can take patch against this CVE from my Fedora commit https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/libxml2/c/ebf18892c23fc8df213b3969145c5f07cfde177f?branch=master

                    Believe me, we understand that the CVE's just keep coming and never stop, and we keep up as best we can with upstreams.

                    I'll pass this info on to our libxml2 maintainer, but can you explain why upstream hasn't incorporated this fix if the CVE is so well known?

                    Number of the desktop packages in distribution is very short. Barely enough to start terminal and firefox .. (firefox sucks )

                    Yes, as you can see in the End of Feature Notices list, we dropped a lot of desktop packages as we've focused on our server business and gotten away from trying to support a general-purpose desktop.

                      On first login user, will be asked in few dialogue boxes to answer on few questions.

                      One of those questions is about registering FB/gmail/TT and few other possible social media services accounts.

                      With only installed desktop-solaris, for example, try to register gmail account will end up on error message window that to register such accounts is not possible as glib-networking package is not installed.

                      Did you guys really ever have been trying to use Solaris GUI login?

                      So .. intel and/or radeon drivers are not working???

                      Will try to check source code later why those drivers have not been used.

                      What is the sense deliver =y new/fresh version of the distribution if users will be reporting bugs against versions of the software which most of the other Unixes are no longer using?

                      Treating updates of the mc, lftp and many more packages which are already in publicly available so strictly as rest of the core distribution seems is a huge waste of the resources. Without pushing that kind of the software to the edges of available versions you are discouraging many potential users.

                      How can potential joe admin convince his boss to start to use Solaris in production if he would be not able to have enough good playground on own desktop?

                      ll pass this info on to our libxml2 maintainer, but can you explain why upstream hasn't incorporated this fix if the CVE is so well known?

                      libxml2 source code maintainer is so busy recently that he give up maintaining libxml2 and few other packages in Fedora.

                      Shame but looks llibxml2 as one of the core packages used by many other important software which looks like now is without proper maintenance on original source code tree level.

                      I saw recently yet another libxml2 CVE reported and fixed in one of the Linux distros. I forgot to bookmark it but I still should have URL in my web browser history.

                      IMO si strict maintenance used in Solaris stretched across whole already distribution is waste of Oracle developers effort. IMO it would be way better to remove all desktop stuff from supported distribution and maintain this part outside Oracle with only relaxed and formalized cooperation between such community and Oracle developers. This will allow Oracle developers focus on core Solarisfunctionalitiess Desktop packages are maintained in hundreds Linux and other Unixes distribution with way better quality and outcome than what it is now in upcoming Sol 11.4 Thre are thousands of people who know way better how to assemble those packages with really high level of the consistency. All this software can be released with the same rhythm of the almost every month released SRUs.

                      Firefox is not on the list. Really shame that Oracle is cutting of integration of the Solarises with OpenStack envs

                      Really .. guys if you have no time to maintain such parts because you have a more important thing to do for highly paid customers it is fully understandable, however cutting such things to the bones without leaving some alternatives is a plain cutting branch on which you are sitting.

                      For example IMO it would be good to have in such packages set zabbix packages which provide IMO one of the best monitoring platforms. I can spend some my private time to have such package OOTB when I'm installing some Solarises. Many other people can bring many other pieces which you don't need to maintain. All that is needed here is create a set of criterias/tests/whatever after passing which some new package can be integrated with rest of officially only approved by Oracle to use with rest of the Solaris distribution.

                        If the vesa driver is chosen, either those couldn't work or your system was configured not to use them.  /var/log/Xorg.0.log is likely to have the best source of info.  We admittedly don't have support for recent Radeons as that requires porting a kernel module that we don't have.

                          Thank you for the confirmation that despite many people working on this part this was never tested.

                          Please let me know if this issue will be opened as something which needs to be fixed.

                          We've delivered hundreds of software updates in this release, but like every enterprise Linux distro, value stability over having the absolute highest version number possible of every package.

                          It is not something about quantity. It is more about quality and taking care of some part of detail (not the total number of issues).

                          Despite claim about stability just have look on at https://git.gnome.org/browse/libxml2/log/?ofs=50 you can find how many things since 2.9.5 (used in 11.4 beta have been fixed). Nothing new about some new functionalities has been introduced since 2.9.5 (only bugfixes).

                          Things happen and it is quite possible that someone lost from his on a radar that something should be done only in the context of this single package.

                          The same is with mc.

                          The same is at least few other packages which I've randomly picked up to verify is delivered packages are up-to-date only from point of view bug fixes committed to original source trees of some OSS project.

                          If you want I can try to prepare a short list of such packages which IMO should be updated before 11.4 GA.

                          About past effort .. (below part will be off-topic but I must wite this somewhere because I'm really frustrated)

                          Just try to ask how many people in the past have been involved in testing beta Solarises since 11 GA?

                          How it is possible that market which value is few if not few tenths billions of dollars were able to attract few tenth to few hundreds of people?

                          How it is possible that people like me must search with a candle in the hand to find any scraps about what will be released in 11.4?

                          I can give you the example.

                          A month ago in Viena was the conference about upcoming Sol 11.4. I've registered for this conference and a bit more than week before the conference I've received cancellation notice about my registration .. so I've cancelled my flight ticket and told my friend in Vienna that he will not have some guest in his home. Because it was more than the week before flight date I've not lost money on returning the ticket.

                          Here is the copy of this email:

                          Because everyone was able to register for this event, of course, I had no sponsor and I was not able to contact ..

                          Two or three days after this I've received another email that it was a mistake and my registration still is valid. This time email was not from donotreply@oracle.com so I was able to reply that I've already cancelled my fight ticket and my conference registration can be cancelled as well. In next reply was told that registration will be cancelled. A week after this when the conference started I've received the welcome email with even wifi details. My friend who was in Vienna saw on the table prepared barge with my name.

                          In other words, someone organizing this event didn't do what I was told that will be done.

                          The question only is how many other visitors not arrived at this event because they've received the same email?

                          I saw one picture one of the slides taken by my friend during one of the open presentations with jaw-dropping new features about upcoming 11.4 with details which could attract hundreds if not thousands of engineers around the world. I've asked my friend who was at this event is it will be possible to put this presentation slides somewhere publically. He told me that he asked about this and those slides will be published somewhere on OTN pages.

                          ~3 weeks after .. nothing!!! .. why? To early to expect that something will be published?

                          In other words, Oracle employees are not taking seriously own words on many occasions, and here is IMO the clue why Oracle is failing with Solaris in the hand. How could some new customers be able to trust that Oracle is able to deliver what this company is promising?

                          Another example. Try to go to theregister.co.uk and try to find something about new features in 11.4. I found literally ONE post about 11.4 explaining why it will be no Sol 12 but 11.4. Any articles about technical details? Null/zero/nothing .. why??

                          Really .. I do not understand why Oracle is so shy presenting 11.4 however in reality 11.4 will contain a huge stash of real gens which this company is going to throw on the market in next few months .. why????

                          From the marketing point of view so far all preparation to 11.4 release IMO it is a total marketing disaster, and here is the real answer your why "it was a waste of time and effort".

                          Oracle is spending billions of dollars on Solaris development and after this publically is behaving like ashamed that they are going to release something with technologies not possible to see on any other OS platform!!! .. why????

                          At the end of the day, IMO Oracle is doing really not enough to attract new customers (even if the cost of necessary effort is really tiny and is more about the proper organisation or arrangement already used resources than real additional money). Additionally on top of this is doing sometimes enough to repeal some existing clients.

                          Sometimes it is possible to have some impression that Oracle has some not obvious long-term targets, however, to succeed it must repeal or discourage existing Oracle technologies consumers.

                          All those "why?" which are bouncing in my head are kind of rhetorical questions. I've been looking for the answers to those questions for more than a decade and so far I've failed.

                          Even some of my conversations with former or current Sun/Oracle employees were not able to add missing pieces of this puzzle.

                          I don't want to start a flame here so please do not comment above. Just please try to talk with few people in Oracle. If you want to continue this part please send me prv reply.

                              You can find technical details about the features on Blogs:
                              I made a list of a few of them.

                                Alanc-Oracle

                                I've pushed a fix to add a dependency to the libsoup package on the glib-networking package, which in turn will cause it to be included when solaris-desktop is installed:

                                https://github.com/oracle/solaris-userland/commit/03beb3d9033eee653e339c97ebd005c3cce94f21

                                It missed the build for the April beta refresh though, so you'll still have to manually add it alongside solaris-desktop there.

                                    I'd be keen to see the comparisons between DDT -> DDT2 improvements on the space savings. That'd make a decent blog post.
