It depends on what the customer wants to do with the scanner.

          Are they planning to

          • scan barcodes on menu items as a means to ring them up on the point of sale
          • or are they using the scanner to scan employee badges, discounts or maybe gift cards?

If the customer wants to scan menu items with Simphony the scanner must have a serial interface:

          • 700516-012-PT Symbol LS2208 barcode scanner with serial interface, cable and stand
          • 700516-013-PT Symbol DS9208 1D/2D imager/scanner with RS232 cable and power supply

WS6/CWS310 will also need a conversion cable (no more 9 pin serial ports):

          • 300319-103-PT RJ45 to DE-9P cable assembly RS232 Serial interface with handshaking

If the customer wants to scan employee badges, member-, gift cards etc. the scanner must have an USB interface

and the related driver has to be able to do a Keyboard emulation = data will be presented to the application as someone typing it

          • 700516-016-PT Symbol DS9208 1D/2D imager/scanner with USB cable
          • 7115254 Symbol DS4308 handheld scanner with USB interface, USB cable, and stand

          Note:

          • If the customer wants to re-use existing (3rd party) USB scanners, the 3rd party vendor might have a bridge software to send the data to a serial port internally -
but of course, this solution will not be supported by Oracle in any way nor do we recommend to use such a solution.
          • If the customer wants to re-use existing (3rd party) USB scanners without any 3rd party bridge software: the USB scanner requires the user to hit the scan barcode key, scan the item, and then hit the enter key to register the scan.
The use of this NLU function is limited, i.a. multiple barcodes for the same item is not supported by Simphony with NLU items
