12.2.0.1 - Premier and Extended Support

M.KamranSep 4 2019 — edited Sep 4 2019

Hi

We are just getting out from 11.2.0.4 and migrating to 12cR2 (12.2.0.1)

There are various reasons for not going to 18c or 19c at this point but down the road, of course we will

The question we have is on the premier support and extended support for 12.2.0.1

Based on the MOS --> Release Schedule of Current Database Releases (Doc ID 742060.1) the patching would end for 12.2.0.1 in Nov 2020 (If we are interpreting this correctly)

It says that premier support for 12.2 Family ends in Jan 2023 but it seems that 18c and 19c IS actually part of the 12.2 family. So based on that does it mean we would need to upgrade to 18c or 19c AFTER Nov 2020 to be able to get Premier or Extended support for 12.2.0.1?

We are just trying to figure out how much time we would have AFTER we upgrade to 12.2.0.1 before we would need to upgrade to 19c? We dont want to be in a position where we dont have support for 12.2.0.1

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

You are reading it correctly.

Yes, you need to be on 18c or 19c according to the info in this chart. It is possible that by 2020, we will have a new Oracle version, but that info is not yet part of this chart.

18c will receive patches until mid-2021. 19c is the long term "12.2" release and will be fully supported without an Extended Support contract until 2023.

I am working towards upgrading all my Oracle databases to 19c this year. That way I can live on that version until 2023 and avoid an upgrade next year.

Cheers,

Take a look to the "Upgrade / Migrate / Consolidate to Oracle 19c" presentation, it explains what you are asking

I agree with Brian 100%: it is time to go to 19c, the terminal release of what they call the "12c LSP family" where "LSP" stands for "Lifetime Support Policy".

But!

I have had problems moving OCI instances to 19c, there were silly issues that it took Support a long time to fix. Simple solution, just a long time to get it.

Also problems with upgrading 12.1 RAC/GI to 18c (can't go to 19, RAC ain't available with SE 19), these were Windows specific.

So be warned - upgrading through the 12.x releases may be a bit harder than going through 11.x, which I thought was (almost) painless.
