How can I capture the string inside of 'oj-input-text' using JavaScript?

If I have some text inside of an oj-input-text element, how can I capture the string using JavaScript? The element Id inside of oj-input-text appears to be recItemString_GPLA\|input, and inside there I have a string that I need to use to validate against. I would like to start by just capturing the string and displaying it to the console, but I have been having trouble doing so. I know the attribute is rendered to the screen because I'm using a setTimeout until it shows. I've attached a screenshot to try and help give a visual of what I'm working with.
