You are actually conflating some questions. You can get the source code from Github (https://github.com/mysql/mysql-server ) or from dev.mysql.com (https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ ) and the MySQL YUM repo is also there. Making your own RPMs packages is fairly easy but you need to do a lot of work by hand to put the files where you need them, customize the config files, and then build your own RPMs. It is a bit of an investment of time and I wish you luck. BTW would you consider writing this up when you are done for a blog post?
