are you also using SSH tunnels?
You have jdbc timeouts in play, which is probably explains most of what you're seeing here.. I find the easiest way to go is to disconnect your connections BEFORE you jump off your network and onto another.

Is there any setting available to control how long it waits? Its not always possible to remember to disconnect.
Yes, but then you might have long running queries aborted as well

Also is there a setting in sql developer to close a connection if left idle for certain number of minutes?
