        If i am using orcl, why did i need to rename the follwoing files from orcl to TSH1
        while starting EMCTL

        So while starting emctl control: I had to rename some directories from orcl to TSH1. After i did this the enterprise manager console started fine:

        [oracle@localhost db_1]$ ls -l /boot/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/oc4j/j2ee | grep orcl
        drwxr-x--- 7 oracle oinstall 4096 May 15 08:22 OC4J_DBConsole_localhost.localdomain_orcl

        Renamed OC4J_DBConsole_localhost.localdomain_orcl to OC4J_DBConsole_localhost.localdomain_TSH1

        [oracle@localhost db_1]$ ls -l /boot/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1 | grep orcl
        drwxr----- 3 oracle oinstall 4096 May 31 15:18 localhost.localdomain_orcl

        Renamed localhost.localdomain_orcl to localhost.localdomain_TSH1
        • 16. Re: error in identifying control file; during startup

          To startup the database i use pfile=init.ora not initTSH1.ora. So the database runs under orcl name.
          startup pfile=/boot/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/init.ora

          So why did i need to change the directories above to TSH1 extention?

            All alert messages related to today's activity are in :alert_TSH1.log.log and not alert_orcl.log
            So does that mean that even if i am using
            startup pfile=/boot/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/init.ora --having db_name=orcl
            my alert logs are going into alert_TSH1.log?

              Usually , we use same SID and db_name. But you can change SID other then db_name.

              SQL> startup
              SQL> show parameter db_name

              NAME TYPE VALUE
              --------------- ------------------------------
              db_name string ORCL1

              SQL> show parameter spfile

              NAME TYPE VALUE
              ------------- ----------- ------------------------------
              spfile string /u01/app/oracle/10.2.0/dbs/spf ileORCL1.ora

              SQL> !ps -aef |grep pmon
              oracle 7219 1 0 01:29 ? 00:00:00 ora_pmon_ORCL1

              SQL>
              SQL>
              SQL> shutdown immediate;
              $cd /u01/app/oracle/10.2.0/dbs/
              $cp spfileORCL1.ora spfileMY.ora
              $ export ORACLE_SID=MY
              $ sqlplus "/ as sysdba"

              SQL> startup
              SQL> show parameter db_name

              NAME TYPE VALUE
              -------------- ----------- ------------------
              db_name string ORCL1

              SQL>
              SQL> !ps -aef |grep pmon
              oracle 7336 1 0 01:34 ? 00:00:00 ora_pmon_MY

              SQL>

              $cdbdump

              $ ls -l alert*
              -rw-r--r-- 1 oracle oinstall 4679 Jun 4 01:34 alert_MY.log
              -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 280401 Jun 4 01:32 alert_ORCL1.log

              $ /sbin/fuser alert*
              alert_MY.log: 7336 7338 7340 7342 7344 7346 7348 7350 7352 7354 7356 7358 7360 7364 7366 7368 7370 7388 7390

              So oracle writing in alert_MY.log , ie ORACLE_SID decide to write in which alert.log

                  I am creating an spfile spfileorcl.ora from init.ora.
                  But on showing whch spfile Oracle is using, it shows spTSH1.ora
                  Q How do i tell oracle to use spfileorcl.ora spfile?

                  SQL> create spfile='/boot/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/spfileorcl.ora'

                    I have copied contents of spfileorcl.ora to spfileTSH1.ora.
                    and the database now startsup with a mere startup command?

                      Thanks for you advice.
                      I have been able to use spfileorcl.ora instead of spfileTSH1.ora by changing ORACLE_SID=orcl
                      in .bash_profile and rebooting the system.

                      Now i am using orcl sid not TSH1.

                        Cool , So instance ORCL is working now.
                        If you face problem related to dbconsole , Just follow steps mention in above post.

                          Hi,

                          your control_file values and the actual file name are not matching. In pfile its control1.ctl and on disk its control01.ctl.

                                    Error while dropping Dropping the EM repository.
                                    Seems it is not taking SYS/change_on_install or SYS/change_on_install as sysdba combination.
                                    On sqlplus i can connect to SYS using SYS/change_on_install as sysdba
