Given that 11g is on the near horizon, does anyone know (and can they say) if Express Edition part of the 11g line-up ?
At Oracle Develop Conference in Prague I asked Mark Townsend (Vice President of Database Product Management) who was product manager for 10g XE, this question.

Answer was that Oracle will wait for 11gR2 to realize new XE version.

Cheers!

More about ODC 2007 in Prague, from my point of view, you can find here:

No edition of 11g really exists yet, except for beta testers.

Will they expand the limitation in 11g xe?

Like: Max memorey: 2G.
Storeage of user data: 10G.

That willl be good news.!!!!
Hans Forbrich
Maybe.

They will probably think about such things if

a) enough of us request them - preferrably by creating a new thread like "Feature Request: Increase Max Memory"; or
b) the competition (DB2 Express and SQL Server Express) does them
Yawei Zhang
Better we, Oracle, lead the pack:

Ok, I say,

-- Max memory: 2G
-- Max storage: 20G.

--------------------------

Those are the PCs which can support currenlty.

Referencing the Express Edition Licensing Information guide - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/license.102/b25456/toc.htm my votes go to -

1. More globalization support, Turkish please :)
2. Data Compression, more free space within limitations :)
3. Flashback Table, Flashback Query is there so why not :)
4. Point-in-time tablespace recovery, This is where Oracle is powerful and why not some showoff to other open-source options :)
5. Oracle Enterprise Manager, or at least a database control, please :)

Best regards.

I strongly encourage that each feature get it's own subject (separate thread). That way Oracle can judge the interest by the number of 'me too' replies the feature gets.

While I agree with the sentiment, the purpose of XE was to provide a small, self-contained package. I suspect that adding OEM DB console would add around 500M to the base install. That, and the memory requirement to run the J2EE environment needed for OEM would be enough to a fair chunk of defeat the target audience.

Although I certainly would encourage certified support using Grid Control. That would encourage 'intranet roll-out' and certainly attack the MS Access base. The second step, then is consolidation into a for-fee license.

Given that the 11g download is 1.7 Gb (as opposed to the 2-CD size downloads for 10gR2), maybe the 'XE' download size is worth discussing.
The impact on download size was remarked on as one of the reasons for leaving the JVM out of XE (and this is pretty much the only bit of functionality available in Standard Edition that isn't in XE).
If the download size for an 11g XE would be bigger anyway, I'd be happier to have the JVM included.

Interesting, to know 11g XE exists for beta testers.

I do not believe there is a beta for 11gXE available (yet)

Since Oracle's JVM is a loadable add-on, I would be more than happy to see
- XE base install (basically as it stands right now)
- JVM & core packages as a separate download and install.

After all, the steps to add JVM to database are described http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/java.102/b14187/chfour.htm#BABCFGAB

I don't mind paying just a few bucks (no more than $20 please) for shipping and handling of a DVD containing the Oracle 11g XE with JVM :) to Europe.
Yawei Zhang
A DVD to China, if possible.

One suggest:

- Enable Method OO4O in Oracle XE, excellent to web developers in windows platform.

I believe that the best combination would be:

-2GB RAM;
-8GB storage;
-Dual Core Suporte;

(something like 2x what we have with OracleXE(10gR2))

Hello, again a complex issue.
Oracle XE with its limitations I have been very useful for developing my apliacaciones both single and multiuser environments.
However, each user needs, one of them is storage, for example, a MySQL developer does not have to worry about space constraints such as storage or RAM. Face it, Oracle must re-invent their strategy with Oracle XE, relax its present limits and add other features such as a console to configure automatic backups and JVM, 32 y 64 bits supports for Windows,Linux and MacOS X.

I would like an Oracle Express Edition with features such as unlimited storage, 2GB of RAM and 2CPU's, may seem exaggerated, but over a competitor such as DB2 Express C 9.5.2 Oracle XE is a dwarf, if DB2 Express C 9.5.2 has not been the host is expected to be more complex than Oracle Database.

Roberto.

A DVD to Africa if possible. I would not mind paying a bit extra for shipping and handling costs.

Ok. Oracle has released Oracle 11g R2 for Linux and Windows, etc.

Can we have an XE edition of Oracle 11g R2 now?
