Doc or FAQ for RMAN/Grid licensing

    Hans Forbrich
There have been a number of questions lately around licensing for Grid Control and for RMAN.

The Oracle Database licensing doc specifically states that a database may be installed and considered licensed if used only for Grid Control and Rman repositories, provided the Oracle products being supported by Grid and Rman are properly licensed.

The same dos, and the OEM licensing doc also go on about the need to separately license the various packs and plug-ins that may be attached to Grid Control.

However, I can find no document or FAQ that explicitly states that Recovery Manager is included in the {database XE/SE1/SE/EE/PE} product license. Or that Grid Control is included in the {database XE/SE1/SE/EE/PE; application server JE/SE1/SE/EE; collaboration suite} product license.

      Anyone have any definitive links?

      Very much appreciated
      /Hans

Hello Hans. I can't find this information either. I'll check with the release management group and get back to you.

          Regards,

Hi again. This was an oversight on our part. Both RMAN and Grid Control (core functionality) are included in all editions. The management packs associated with Grid Control are an extra-cost option, as described in the "Options and Packs" chapter of the Database Licensing Information book.

The licensing books will be updated to reflect this. Thanks for bringing to our attention.

              Many thanks. Good start.

Clarification please - "all Editions" includes?

              1) The statement as written implies database family;
              2) All Editions could be [mis]construed to include DB10gR2 Express Edition;
              3) Comparable wording for App Server and Collab Suite would be appreciated.

              /Hans

Can someone from Oracle verify that this is still the case? Thanks.

Yes, the following is still the case:
Both RMAN and Grid Control (core functionality) are included in all editions. The management packs associated with Grid Control are an extra-cost option, as described in the "Options and Packs" chapter of the Database Licensing Information book.

This is stated in the "Infrastructure Repository Databases" section in the 10.2 and 11.2 Oracle Database Licensing Information guides.
Here's a link to the section in the 11.1 guide:

                  Hope this helps,

It looks like that free licenses for OEM and RMAN imply that such repositories created on a stand alone Oracle database do not require an additional license. Correct?

                      Yes, this statement is correct:

                        Hi,
is there a definition in the documentation of what can be accomplished with Enterprise Manager Grid Control for Database Management without the purchase of any of the management packs, ie. what is the 'core functionality' ?

                        Regards,
                        Andy Helm

                          It's more by subtraction ...

Go to http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/welcome.html and look at the licensing manual. It describes the options and functionality - what is left over is core.

It's actually a lot of stuff included - overview, start/stop, all schema and security management, backup/revcovery, scheduling and resource management.
But there is also a lot excluded - No performance tuning, alerts/paging/email, diagnostic analysis, confguration and change managent.

(The above is a subset of included/excluded - look at the database license doc, chapter 1 for more info as well)

please check the below link for RMAN and GRID control DB license.

In this document please check "Infrastructure Repository Databases " section

"A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Recovery Manager (RMAN) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the Oracle databases managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This repository database may also be used for the Oracle Enterprise Grid Control repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.

A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control (OEM Grid Control) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the targets (databases, applications, and so forth) managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This database may also be used for the RMAN repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses."

                            thanks

Did you know you responded to a nearly 2 year old thread, and with a link already posted a few posts up?
