Why don't you just use the included page type "calendar"?
The page calendar does not give the ability to look at a number of people simultaneously to see who has a free day and who does not.
I've written a PL/SQL package for doing this. You can download it here: http://www.patrickhaston.co.uk/plsql/calendar.html.
To use it within APEX you simply add a PL/SQL region and call the SHOW(...) function setting the relevant parameters. You will have to add forward and back navigation to change the view dates as items in the page (a date picker works well). You can also change the timescale from days to weeks, months, quarters or even years.
