      I was trying to backup my database in noarchivelog mode and got the following errors
      pls any idea on what is all about.
      Meanwhile I created the directory /rmanbackup/MLQA/ as a root user. does it mean that oracle user cannot write on the directory.

          Paul M.
          I created the directory /rmanbackup/MLQA/ as a root user.
          does it mean that oracle user cannot write on the directory.
          Quite obvious. Assuming oracle is your oracle user, and dba the dba group, as root try

          # chown oracle:dba /rmanbackup/MLQA

          CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'rmanbackup/MLQA/%F';
          it should be '/rmanbackup/MLQA/%F'.

            I have given oracle now the ownership of the directory /rmanbackup/MLQA
            #mkdir -p /rmanbackup/MLQA
            #chown -R oracle:oinstall /rmanbackup/MLQA
            #chmod -R 775 /rmanbackup/MLQA

            Then I do
            #chown -R oracle:dba /rmanbackup/MLQA

            i restarted in mount mode, and exucute again this backup command in rman
            RMAN> run {
            2> BACKUP DATABASE;
            3> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
            4> }

            and got the above errors.
            1.it seems there is a configure command that was set wrong,pls check the rman configuration and let me know.
            2.also no command seems to be executing in rman like report need backup;
            what to do next?

              Hi,

                Where is /rmanbackup directory ? do you have space enough on that filesystem ? Please post the result of

                # df -k

                  Yes, as long as the DB is not OPEN (it has to be in MOUNT state). The error would be different, for example

                  ORA-19602: cannot backup or copy active file in NOARCHIVELOG mode

                    Paul,

                    I am sorry .!! i didn't notice the database is in mount state. I am wrong here.

                    As you said, the error which we are getting points out the disk permission error.

                    i would request you to login as oracle user . Login to /rmanbackup/MLQA

                    and issue touch aa. Please check if you are able to create files.

                        'rmanbackup' is under the '/' mountpoint. And obviously user 'oracle' is not allowed to write to this directory.

                          Looking at that directory structure under which place am I suppose to mount "rmanbackup/MLQA" ?

                            If this is the same error, check the space remaining on /rmanbackup/MLQA

                            Backup failed again
