Migration from Oracle Form 6i to ApEx (Application Express).

      Hello,

Currently, there is no any available tool to migrate the Oracle Forms 6i to ApEx (HTML DB).

Any one can guide me to to migrate Oracle Forms 6i to ApEx (HTMLDB)?

      Thanks in advance.

The way that I have done it before is just take screenshots. Hopefully you already know the data model behind the scenes. Currently there is not any functionality that supports a forms -> APEX migration, but with that I say "Currently". At ODTUG we were shown that this is something they(the APEX team) are working on.

            Hello Patric,

I have spoken with "Dimitri Gielis" on same query, but wrote me:
" We have done Forms to APEX migrations in many projects, so you can hire us to guide you with that if you want so. "

Hence I am still waiting to understand the way of migration.

            Thanks for your reply.

              Hello,

To be complete, this was my complete reply to Rahul:
              --
We have done Forms to APEX migrations in many projects, so you can hire us to guide you with that if you want so.
I'm also going to do a blog post about a tool the APEX development team is working on to give you a headstart with this migration.
So in short, there's coming a tool that will help you to do that. In the meanwhile we do that manually and in a phases approach.
              --

So if you want something automated, you'll want to wait for the new tool the APEX Dev team is working on. If you want to start now (like a lot of other customers): we would need more information what you just want to do. Do you want to migrate your whole current application? or just a part from it and let APEX and Forms work together?

Basically if most of your logic is in PLSQL packages the migration will go quicker. In our experience we have seen that people tend to want to change their application as well and add new functionalities. Remember you're in a web environment with APEX and maybe things will be different than you were used to.

              Hope that clarifies better.

              Regards,
              Dimitri

What about this tool: designer2Apex made by www.caesar.nl ?

                  Hello,

I believe that tool starts from the Designer repository and not from the Form/Report. However, there's no public demo available yet (as I'm aware of), the only thing they released was a presentation with the idea.

How they do it/are going to do it, is not clear yet. I suppose for them it is. I guess they have looked at an export file of APEX or internally in APEX how the creation of an application and pages are done. By going through the designer repository they call the Apex procedures to generate the components.

                  Regards,
                  Dimitri

Hy, your answer has a global approach, thanks a lot.
Then if we asume that we want to migrate our whole current application, from Forms to APEX, which would be the main steps ?

                    Thanks a lot again !

                      Hello Miguel,

You mean, you want to know how to do a Forms to APEX migration manually today?
It depends project to project, some questions which would need to be answered:
                      - Where is your logic? (in the forms or in plsql packages)
                      - Which functionalities do you use?
                      - Is your business process still the same?
                      - Do you want to do a 1-1 migration or you want to streamline the app?

Remember you're in a web environment with APEX, so some things might be different.
Some things people will love, some others they don't ;-)

Thanks a lot Dimitri, your answer has again a global approach.

Trying to do simple first we can assume :

1-The logic is in the forms
2- We use the most simple fonctionalities as querys and tables updates
3-Our business process is still the same
4- We want to do a 1-1 migration

What simple steps you advice me ?

                        Friendly, Thanks to you

                          Hello Miguel,

The tool to do your migration automatically is not available yet (I only have a video in low res how it can look like), so for now:

                          0) I guess you have already APEX installed, you have a workspace and created a new application in that workspace
                          1) Open 1 Form
                          2) Open APEX and create a Page
                          3) Look at your datablocks etc and create the same thing in APEX (datablock would be region)
                          4) Your logic you can include as a Process or you can create a plsql package to do it in there and call the package/procedure/function from APEX
                          5) Run the Form and APEX Page and see if they are equal, if not adapt, if yes, go to the next Form.
                          6) During you're busy you might see you need to do some repetitive things, have a look if Shared Components can help you there, or Page 0.

Is this answer more what you want?

                          Regards,
                          Dimitri

Thanks again Dimitri, you help me a lot.

May I ask you what is the process you would advice me if my logic of migration is in PL/SQL packages and not in the forms ?
