Have you tried viewing data in Physical layer once you set your connection pool details by Right clicking on any of the table. Please do that. If you able to view data there then there will not be any problem with DB Connection. If you not able to view data then check the password and other information in connection pool. Thanks.Swami.
I can view data in physical layer without a problem. I have also tested both ODBC and OCI connections outside to be working ok. But I continue to have this error on BI answers, any ideas
How is your connection pool defined, are you using Shared Logon? or are you relying on Logon details from the user?
As you can see from the error, OBIEE is passing an invalid username/password through to Oracle. If it's working from the Admin console then it must be something to do with the user that's logged into Answers.
I'm using shared logon and it is checked to indicate that shared logon is in effect. I'm using default authentication currently logged in to answers as Administrator. See Cursor cache below.

Are you running your BI Server / Answers on the same machine as the AdminTool?
Can you run a server-side trace on Oracle DB to look at what username is coming through?
First step is to understand if the correct username's being used, just wrong PW - or if the wrong username's getting picked up somewhere.
We are facing the same problem.
there 1 tnsnames file.
We use the same rpd and webcat in accep and there it works fine.
In production it doesn't.
the nQSconfig.ini and instanceconfig.xml are the same. No solution found yet.
Looks like it is an invalid user id or password. Please check your database credentials in the connection pool or the session variables if you are using session variables in your connection pool
well, i had a very similar problem, and in my case the solution was ridiculously simple:
i was trying to set the password for the connection pool by editing the connection pool properties, and then to check, i always would run the update row count running into this error every time.
i tried everything from redefining new ODBC Data Sources, to writing camel case names (i was desperate) etc.
Now, what i did then (and it worked) was to do exactly as always, but after closing the edit window for the connection pool, i saved my repository and checked in everything.
After that, the update rowcount worked and dashboards and answers too.
not very intuitive, is it?
my settings are:
Call Interface: OCI 10g/11g
datasource name: default(ORCL)
Password, well, my password
hope that helps
are you able to update the rowcount of your tables?
if not, try clicking on the save button on your admin tool and then update rowcount. If that works, i believe you're done.
I am getting the same error when i am clicking answers. I am able to see table data in presentation level. i also given shared log on. please find the below error..
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 17001] Oracle Error code: 1017, message: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied at OCI call OCISessionBegin. [nQSError: 17014] Could not connect to Oracle database. (HY000)

Your help is highly appreciated.
If you're using the Oracle Application Server, make sure that your tnsnames in \product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\NETWORK\ADMIN has the same entries as the tnsnames in the \app\oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN. It appears that the presentation server uses the values from the oas and the bi server (repository) uses the values from the client.

I was having same problem. Check the settings in the [SECURITY] section in the NQSConfig.INI.
In my case the line AUTHENTICATION_TYPE = BYPASS_NQS was uncommented. After commenting it the problem got resolved.
