    TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name

    Raman
      hi,

      actually silly...fighting for some hours now...

      i am adding the service names in tnsnames.ora but not pinging getting the below error

      TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name

      i am using ibm aix
      verified
      case, TCP,servername , port and service name..

      i just copied from the existing tag and edited in the same file...

      other name already in there is pinging...anything i am missing here

      SERVICE1 =
      (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS_LIST =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =<server name in lower case>)(PORT = 1521))
      )
      (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVICE_NAME = DBID1)
      )
      )

      SERVICE2 =
      (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS_LIST =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <server name in lower>)(PORT = 1523))
      )
      (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVICE_NAME = DBID2)
      )
      )

          TESTDB =
          (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.234.4.42)(PORT = 1521))
          (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = testdb)
          )
          )

          Maintain the syntax as mentioned above. Edit the above one according to your need and paste it to your tnsnames.ora file and retry.

              TNS-3505 means it couldn't even find the entry in tnsnames.ora. Monkeyinig around with how that name would be resolved (host=, port=, service_name=) is premature.

              SHOW us your full command line and result when you try to tnsping the entry.
