You could add more log groups.
select group#, bytes from v$log;
show parameter log_archive_dest
You may be able to enable the destination.
alter system set log_archive_dest_1=defer;
alter system set log_archive_dest_1=enable;
alter system switch logfile;
connect to db and check
select * from v$session_wait ;
or check for awr report / addm for suggestion

I resolved the problem by clearing the redo log file in question.
ALTER DATABASE CLEAR UNARCHIVED LOGFILE GROUP 2;
This cleared the log file and made it available for normal redo log process.
However, all the previous backups since the day the problem triggered have been invalidated.
As updated I resolved the problem by clearing the log file.
