"Typically, soft bounces are returned with an SMTP reply code in the 400 range. If Oracle Eloqua receives a soft bounce, it will attempt to resend the message for 48 hours in most cases. After that, Oracle Eloqua stops sending the message. The email address remains valid, and you can continue to send messages to this email address."

Does that mean that the mail will always remain softbounce and not consider hardbounce after 48 hrs?

Once an email is hardbounce will it always be considered hardbounce?

@Rashmi Rao, regarding your question on soft bounces: yes and no. It will not be considered a hard bounce 48 hours after a soft bounce. Per the documentation, Eloqua converts a soft bounce to a hard bounce after receiving soft bounce error 421.4.4.0 four times:

In certain circumstances, Oracle Eloqua converts a soft bounce to a hard bounce. This happens when Oracle Eloqua receives the soft bounce error 421 4.4.0 [internal] no MXs for this domain could be reached at this time 3 times within 12 months. After receiving this same error for the forth time, Oracle Eloqua assumes the email address is invalid, updates the contact's bounce status, and marks the email address as invalid. After that, Oracle Eloqua automatically excludes the contact from future email sends.

And regarding your hard bounce question, a hard bounce is always a hard bounce unless you manually change the bounce status and mark the email address as valid again. Per the documentation:

After Oracle Eloqua finds a hard bounce, it updates the contact's bounce status and marks the email address as invalid. After that, Oracle Eloqua automatically excludes the contact from future email sends.

If you identify contacts that were incorrectly identified as hard bounces, you can manually change the bounce status and set the email address as valid.

    Thank you @User_NVFDK .

In the campaign we want to use filters to decide the contacts further communication flow. So hard bounces can be sent through the decision rule immediately, while soft bounces should be evaluated for 48 hours before next step?
