Custom Fields that use the '&' symbol

We recently had an issue with a custom field that used the '&' symbol. (specifically a billing category of T&M). The OpenAir Engineering team fixed it on the backend. We were originally asked to go in and re-save every T&M project we have to fix it. (we said it wasn't an option).
It was causing filtering issues but it was also causing reporting issues where the totals of the subcategory (billing category) was not equal to the roll up total.
I wanted to put this out there in case anyone else is seeing any odd behavior or uses the '&' symbol in a custom field.
