Variable filter from formula in summary saved search

I have a formula in my search that is a maximum value of a case statement to select a date based on transaction type (case when {applyingtransaction.type}='Item Fulfillment' then {applyingtransaction.custbody_mhi_pod_delivered_date} when {applyingtransaction.type}='Item Invoice' then {applyingtransaction.trandate} end)
How do I use this as a variable filter on the search? When I have no values selected, it returns the desired data, when I put dates in the filter, the search returns no data.
