What is the trick to make a field importable or mass-updatable?

A vendor bundle gave us a new field. I need to populate it with a default. I do have access to edit their field.

So, this field doesn't show up as a mass-updatable field in the mass update area. It also doesn't show up as a mappable field when using the CSV import feature.

Is there a setting in the item that exposes it to these methods of mass updating/ importing?
