Setting custom date via workflow formula

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to set a custom ship date field for purchase orders - since products on the same PO can have very different lead times, I have a field to set the expected ship date for each line. I also have a custom field for lead time, in days, which is pulling the lead time from the item record.

I can set the ship date field via the workflow if I use the join(current record) and a field (date), but not if I use a formula, even if the formula is simply {trandate}.
