Change a field on a form from inline to normal

I have a customer request to have all fields on a Item form set to inline and then when in edit mode, based on the logged in users role certain fields set to normal.

I have a script that does this as a WF will take to long to create. But I can cannot find a way to change a field display type to normal.

I have tried SetDisplayType but it does not work, I am not sure if it a SS 1 function. and isDisplay and isDisabled do not change the fields state.

Any advice or solutions.
