Replenishment Method MPS vs. MRP in Planning Workbench?

Does anyone know what functionality is used in the Planning Workbench for Items flagged as Master Production Scheduling (MPS) vs. Material Requirements Planning (MRP).

We cannot find documentation that tells what the system is doing differently based upon a Replenishment Method of MPS vs. MRP.
